When I actually stop and thought about it.....

I was so caught up in producing visuals for the brochure that I totally forgot about the typefaces that I would use for the actual brochure, a brochure is just not about pretty pictures but about the information inside of it.

So looks like it's back to the drawing board to choose a different context which just really focuses on my visuals...

As my mum always says to me....

"Ash, why do you always make a mountain out of a molehill for yourself?" - AlisonKay Wilson

Developing ideas and compositions....

These drawing are on a larger scale, A4, I know that I am using the same colours of deep blues and blacks  but I have a reason due to the actually instrument, I have been using youtube to listen to the sounds of these instruments. With each one I am listening to I am translating a sound into a colour somewhat like a Synesthestic process. When I listened heres what instrument I came up with from my notes....

percussion - deep reds - a bold colour which strikes warning. loud.
trumpets - yellow -  lively colour for a lively sound
guitar - rainbow colour range
cello - dark blues - sombre slow sounding instruments
violin - baby blue - light high pitched sound
oboe - greens - fresh sound in higher notes and and calm sounds when lower notes are playes
flute - light powder pink - a dainty sound

the method of applying the ink is using the edge of credit cards and this is always like a struggle whilst I am drawing with it because of the restriction of being able to draw a curved lines so making quick brush marks and rotating the card layering inks give me that option create a curved line. However there is one thing I can't work out though, I don't know whether it is the scale which is too small. Or I am making my drawings too complicated for the method. However I really like this illustration of the cello playe, layering of ink to create tone so then it doesn't look flat. I like the abstration of the figure in it, it kind of contradict everything I was taught from life drawing but that is the beauty of abstraction you have the ability to warp and 'adjust' features to make them work for you.

Music is composed of layers of sound so I took this aspect and moved it on into my work....

I like this composition however I have not really considered colour. So I am going to create separate layers of tracing paper then copy them on to asesthate. From this point I can jiggle the layers about and when I have found a composition that I like scan them backinto the computer for print.

First marks made.....

Here are the first few intital starts of what came from my lists of brainstorming. All in drawing inks and letting the materials do the work for me, I made these little thumbnails on A6 by applying ink using blunt edges of card or simply dripping ink and blowing it to create some kind of composition which was really based on chance. However with this technique I found that it really restricted what I was trying to do because of the scale so I needed to increase or make what I drawing simpler so I could make it clearer and not totally abstract.

Methods of applying..

Contexts....

Bags are a good place to have illustrations on seen they are available for people to see. A you're walking through town they're always people that have a bag which makes you want it. A bag is a fashion statement and would also be a good way to advertise the Alight festival.

T-Shirts are also a fashion statement and they're basically a walking poster, if I produce images which people would refer to the alight festival it would be good advertisement. I would need to consider composition to create design for the tee so that the tshirt could be worn after the event,as a souvenir.

Scarves especially silk would also be a nice idea however I would need to make the outcome available to all and this rather feminine.

Inspiration...

Many artist base their illustration and works on music and sounds they hear. However in this work I am particularly drawn to the work of Wassily Kandinsky, most of his work was based upon the interpreatation from sound to abstract painting, and this is the part which I am interested in.

since I have began to specialise in illustration my outcomes have always seemed to be more sucessful using the untraditional methods of appling lines and marks to paper, for example using edges of cards, and it seems to work for me. (After plenty of practice and tries)

The qualities of the abstraction of lines and geomtric shapes is what I want to bring forward into my works to enable that I am able to create what I am thinking in my mind to paper.

I am going to limit myself to two/three colours in one particular piece due to the thought of printing costs as this is a realistics factor in a live brief to consider.

using a variety of inks and acrylics to create the lines.

First thoughts....

When I think about what the Alight event is about, it is a cultural gathering which celebrates art and music. (mainly music) so as a starter I made lists of connecting words, to stir up ideas and get the creative juices flowing.

Here were my lists...

Music
Tune
Rhythm
Flow
Loud
Quiet
notes
quartet
music sheets
black and white
introduction
verse
chorus
harmony
random
canon
rhyme
pluck
string
bow
blow
reed
silver
mahogany
bold
brass
percussion
tighten
beat
bass
easy

my list lasted 4 coloms of a 2 double sided sheets of A4.
But yeah you get the picture. :)

Alight......

Well after meeting the client, I cam away from the lecture rather more confused than enlightened with added information. I mean, I have several potential ideas that I am really getting into with my sketchbook but there were a few things I noted down from Rachel talking which made me realise that I am going to have to adapt my design...

For example, with regards to the printing costs of the posters and premium quality brochures, the amount of colours I use are going to have to be considered as the more colours needed to print the more funding it's going to take up from the alight events funds.

Also, specific sites haven't been chosen as yet for the street art pieces, so it's just a matter of creating lots of ideas and a matter of ruling out the impossibles when we have recieved more information.  From reading the brief, I really had my heart set on doing some type of street art, or installation but the lack of information of where and what times and what actual materials I can use is worrrying me so I am going to sketch up several ideas and move on with the print side to the brief, creating visuals for the premium souvenir brochures.....

Here are a few resources that I have been looking at to aid me with my research....

Which fruit do you like better... Blackberry or Apple.

Today's development in technology in mobile devices has almost split the population into two. The Blackberry or Apple IPhone. Personally, I am all over Blackberry, mainly because I prefer the aesthetics, the way the messenger is set up and I like the QWERTY button keypad, none of this touch screen malarky! But there is only one aspect of Blackberries which really bug me... is the apps. I find that the BB apps aren't as good as the iPhone ones. (I don't have an iPhone but I have an iPod Touch mp3 player)

In this blog post I am going to show you my favourite apps on both Blackberries and
iPhones which are design related.

There are some great photo editing apps on both phones but I feel that the iPhone is the winner on this one!

If I had an iPhone, this would definitely be my most used app, this app enables you to add a filter on your photos for example Lomo, contrast and Black and white filters.

I looked through all the Photo and Video apps on Blackberry app world and found a couple of apps which are quite similar but not as good as the iPhone app.

Instaphoto is a free BB app and the similar to Instagram, however it doesn't have the range of filters like the iPhone app. A few screenshots of this app...

However both of these apps, give you the option to upload your edited pic to Twitter or Facebook, which is a quick and easy way to share pics taken with your friends.

Another photo editing app is photoshop (for iPhone) Adobe Photoshop Express

This app features most of the basic photo editing skills like brightness and contrast, crop, and some effects like soft focus, pop art and negative filters. Like the other apps, you can upload straight to your Adobe account or other Social Networking sites.

On the Blackberry, the best I could find was Photo Editor Ultimate - costing £2.99 wheresas Adobe Photoshop Express is free. And is no where is near as good as the iPhone app.

Facebook apps on the phones are similar but personally I find that Facebook for Blackberry is more reliable seen as the chat works most of the time, where as the iPhone app chat was knackered, all the time and always you to get bugs and not many app updates to fix them.

There are a few more apps which are good but they all do similar things, with the
photoediting apps and SNS, it allows people to connect with people on the go, anytime of the day here's an example...

In the summer, I went to the cash point for my nan, and drew some money out. When I was counting the money, I found this £10 note.

My family and I found this very amusing so with the technology of mobile phones and
SNS's, I uploaded it to Facebook, to share the joke.

This new development in technology will have to biggest impact on design because it makes it more effecient to have the ability to upload and share, now, now, now.
